Anxiety and the Gifted Child

Gifted children come with so many, well, gifts! At the same time, they may struggle with perfectionism, negative thinking, over-excitabilities, emotional intensity and social difficulties. Any of these may lead to debilitating anxiety which can look like opposition, refusal, and other challenging behaviors that often end up hijacking peaceful family functioning.

It is not unusual for parents to find themselves in the difficult position of trying to navigate the fine line between compassionate support and over accommodation. And, when parents are wrestling with their own anxiety, they may find it even harder to establish clear expectations and set firm limits when they are most needed.

This important class will provide parents with strategies based on the most current research on the unique needs of gifted children. We will discuss tools for effective communication and proven ways to both alleviate anxiety and increase coping skills. Parents will leave this class with an increased capacity to respond thoughtfully and compassionately to their anxious and gifted child and the knowledge that they are not alone.
